‘Singing Success’ by Brett Manning is by far the most comprehensive product available in vocal training. It consists of 12 CDs, a DvD, and a workbook. One of the reasons this product is so popular is the guarantee of an octave increase in your range just from using the program. I have had a copy for a couple of years now, and have personally made great progress from using it.
The first couple of CDs are all about definitions and getting into the technique. Brett clearly defines each vocal register and other things crucial to understand before using his method. He also answers the top 10 questions he has received as a vocal coach throughout the years, which clears up a lot of common misconceptions.
Once the technique lessons start, you will immediately begin to notice improvements in your voice. These lessons are systematic, meaning each exercise builds upon the last. Before moving on, you must first master the previous exercise if your really going to benefit. I recommend everyone spend at least a month on each lesson before moving onto the next.
The next few CDs cover vocal style in genres such as pop, r&b, country, rock, and blues. You will work on exercises intended to teach you these style points of each genre, and then apply them to a short song. This is extremely helpful for singers of one genre who are interested in crossing over to another, or to create your own unique style by combining different genres together.
The last thing you will learn is song application. You will apply both the technique and style points you have learned to a few different songs. This is a nice addition to the program, as most don’t ever touch on actually working on a song, let alone applying proper technique to it.
The manual and DVD both act only as support to the information on the CDs. The manual provides some visual pictures/charts to help you understand what your doing better, and the DVD is just a briefer on the technique with some interesting lesson footage thrown in.
I recommend Singing Success to anyone of any contemporary genre who is interested in taking lessons, but can’t afford to regularly visit a teacher. I would also highly recommend it to anyone interested in developing a more interesting vocal style, as the vocal style lessons are some of the most effective and complete that I have found.
If you’re a singer, his name is probably familiar to you. He started out like many singers–frustrated with the lack of results from the vocal lessons he found. After searching through several vocal coaches and methods, Brett came across a set of closely-guarded exercises compiled by an old gentleman who taught several well-known “star” singers.
The exercises proved very effective for Brett’s own voice and every singer he taught them to. These techniques truly made singing as easy as speaking.
Building on those simple foundational exercises, he began to experiment and innovate, filling in the “gaps,” testing new techniques for effectiveness as he went. He eventually formulated lessons for teaching vocal tone and style, and incorporated the older exercises into his own innovative method.
Brett has become a master teacher and one of the world’s most sought after vocal coaches, largely because of his uncanny ability to “see with his ears,” and instantly invent exercises that get astounding results.
He teaches voice in his Nashville studio to singers of all genres, both the undiscovered… and “the best of the best.” He is also a Judge/Mentor for the new CMT music television reality show, “Can You Duet.”
Brett has worked with artists from Capitol, Columbia, Atlantic, Interscope, Dreamworks, Lyric Street, MCA, Epic/Sony, KMG, Word, Embassy, Gotee Records, as well as countless independent record labels. He has worked with the casts of Broadway productions of Les Miserables and Jekyll and Hyde, as well as the Broadway tour of Elton John’s Aida.
His client list contains winners of the world’s most prestigious vocal awards, including the Doves, the CMA Awards, and yes, the Grammies. Despite having an incredible five octave range himself, Brett continues to claim “my students eventually out-sing me!”
Brett has a unique perspective on the novice singer, “beginning students have the unique opportunity to build their voice free of any bad habits.” In fact, it was his love for amateur singers that, after a decade of teaching private lessons, inspired Brett to begin offering vocal seminars and workshops around the nation.
Brett is known for his fun, encouraging demonstrations, showing how even “brand new” singers can experience immediate improvement in the range, ease, and quality of their voice.
Audience participants are awestruck when, often in less than an hour, Brett adds a full octave to their usable range. It’s something you simply must see to believe! (When you get a chance, check out the clips in the Free Stuff section.)
Brett now spends most of his time doing private coaching for professional singers and those aspiring artists fortunate enough to be within easy reach of his Nashville studio.
Unwilling to give up on his passion for teaching singers of every type, regardless of their skill level, geographical location, or professional aspirations, Brett needed a new way to make his incredible teaching methods available to everyone.
That’s when the Singing Success Program was born. Brett Manning spent over three years putting together the most complete pre-recorded vocal training course available anywhere, based on his revolutionary, and now world famous Brett Manning Method.
